One easy way of complying with the imminent regulatory changes is through the addition of an on-engine generator to an existing or downsized spark ignition or compression ignition engine. This is where the Ashwoods Electric Motors’ on-engine generator comes to the fore.
The Ashwoods on-engine generator solution incorporates and utilises all of the benefits enabled by the aforementioned interior permanent magnet technology. With this in mind, the Ashwoods on-engine generator offers huge advancements in reducing fuel consumption, emissions and operating costs – all improving efficiency as well as ease of packaging and installation.
In certain applications, a further benefit can be seen by replacing the traditional hydrostatic architecture with an electrified architecture, coupled with an on-engine generator.

The beauty of the Ashwoods technology is that it can be adapted depending on the application and needs of the customer. For example, one solution, for applications requiring a permanently coupled electric machine, involves rotating components in the engine, allowing for vastly reduced inertial and vibrational impact when compared to traditional technologies. Similarly, if the application demands the option to couple and decouple the motor from the engine, Ashwoods on-engine generator can run in electric only mode. This allows the rotor to spin without the extra load of the crankshaft or using fuel. This solution is a proprietary Ashwoods technology, replacing a traditional electro-mechanical clutch – offering a reduction in cost, weight and size.
Both of the options above are able to fully integrate into the engine and can even become part of the engine bell housing to provide an extremely compact and cost-effective alternative compared to the current solutions being used in the market today.
